Can flat foot lead to knee pain and back pain ?

Updated: Mar 24, 2023

"Flat feet can be present by birth or develop later on due to either weight of the body or occupation requiring excessive footwork" -Are there actually people with flat feet?

Yes, that was my reaction when I was first introduced to this condition. Flat feet aren't so uncommon and can occur during childhood or also form due to various factors like injuries, obesity or due to some neurological or muscular disease.

"Absence of arch is due to insufficient tendon tension" -Flat feet occur when the presence of arches on the bottom of the feet is not there. Due to the absence of the arch the whole of a flat footed person touches the ground. These people don't have tendon tension or the right bone structure to form this arch. Simple daily tasks like walking and standing can contribute to flat footing. "Lack of foot arch causes swelling in the feet muscles and bones" -To put simply, on standing the inner border of the feet, there should be a slight arch. When the foot arch flattens on the ground it creates an effect leading to misalignment of the lower body. This misalignment thus causes the bones of shin and thighs to twist abnormally inwards which puts stress on the small bones and muscles of the feet which swells them causing pain in feet. "Hips and back joints compensate for ground forces and thus aching them" -Flat feet also cause the knees to bend on inside which causes pressures on them and can also leads to arthritis. Also the forces from the ground transmit through the legs thus leading the joints from hips and back to also compensate and hence inducing pain in these joints too. Therefore, if you or someone you know has flat feet do consult a physiotherapist for the same because the longer you're taking the pain, it'll take longer to heal.Consult our expert physiotherapist near you in gurugram and get your assesment done , book through our website or practo
